Position Summary:

The College of Arts & Humanities at Houston Christian University seeks an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, of English to join the Department of English, Communication, Great Texts, and Modern Languages who is able to teach a variety of core composition and literature classes within the English program. Particular subdisciplines or specializations prioritized in this search include Composition and Rhetoric, Medieval Literature, or British Literature. The successful candidate will teach introductory, survey, and advanced courses, depending on program needs, with a teaching load of 4/4. In addition to teaching, this position requires active participation in scholarship and service.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach a 4-4 load within the English program, including our core composition and literature courses;
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university activities, including serving on university committees;
  • Demonstrate dedication to advising, teaching, and scholarship;
  • Follow established departmental and institutional guidelines;
  • Provide timely, quality access to students during regularly maintained office hours;
  • Identify and assess appropriate student learning outcomes;
  • Evaluate students by established means to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and to inform them in a timely manner of their progress;
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community;
  • Submit grades, syllabi, and required forms in a timely fashion;
  • Actively integrate the Christian faith in teaching;
  • Actively engage in scholarly work in their related discipline;
  • Participate in traditional academic functions and institutional and professional service;
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should have a M.A. or Ph.D. in English Literature, Composition and Rhetoric, Comparative Literature, or a related field.
  • Successful candidates will possess the ability to teach courses in literature and composition from a Christian perspective and will demonstrate enthusiasm for liberal arts education. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to teaching and mentoring students and will have a specialization in Composition & Rhetoric, Medieval Literature, or British Literature. Candidates should be available to begin work in the Fall 2025 semester. Review of applications for the position will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
